You're already talking to yourself. You're just not choosing the words.

There's a conversation running in your head all day and you didn't pick most of it. It's on autopilot, it came from somewhere else, and it's making decisions for you before you even know there was a decision to make. Whether you cut the last interval. Whether you go with the move. Whether you back yourself in the final 200.

Most athletes talk to themselves in a way they'd never accept from a coach. If someone stood on the side of the road and said out loud what you say to yourself on a bad day, you'd fire them on the spot.

This isn't positive thinking and it isn't standing in front of a mirror pretending. It's the most direct tool you have for changing what your body is willing to give you, in the exact moment you need it.

What's inside

1
The three kinds of self-talkThird person, instructional, affirmational. They do completely different jobs, and using the wrong one at the wrong moment is why it hasn't worked for you before.
2
The two stems"I'm the type of person who…" and "It's normal for me to…". The two openers that do the heavy lifting, and why.
3
The line bankReady-made lines for the sessions you want to cut, the efforts where your mind says stop, the start line, and after a bad day.
4
The interval experimentOne session that proves self-talk is real, so you stop doing it because someone told you to and start doing it because you've felt it.
5
When to use whichBefore you train, mid-effort, on the start line, and after a setback. Plus the two-line daily practice that changes your default.
